INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECT (1)
Community Service Initiative
Week 1
All semester 6 students are assigned to sponsorship group.
However, Mr.Edwin and my course mates had our first meeting on the week 1. We were separated into 4 groups which is furniture, painting, stationaries, books and magazines. Each group have different numbers of students depends on the need. I was group into books/magazines with another 4 mates.
Week 2
On second week, we discussed about on how to find sponsorship and find more old books that people are no longer use it. Then some idea comes to our mind, we decided to make brochure and distribute it to people on street or put it into the housing mailbox so that they know where to donate their old books.
Another great idea from our group mate is that we decided to make poster for and stick it on the wall in Taylor's university and they can drop by their old books on the date stated.
Week 3
On the 3rd week, we think of another quick and easy way to find books. That is, all of the members in the group has an instagram account, so we all post it onto the social media to look for old books.
Fortunately, we got some response on the social media and receive a lot of goodies from our lecturer Miss Aida !
She is our first donater who donated 4 big bags of story books! We also start collecting old books from our relatives and friends.
Besides, we had a quick and easy meeting with Mr.Edwin on Wednesday to report on our progress and spend some time to communicate with our group mates on how to make it better.
Week 4
On the 4th week, we had a presentation on Friday with all the students who are taking this subject which is with the semester 3 students and diploma students.
The purpose on this presentation is basically to present on our progress so that each and everyone knows the progress and we can help with one another and proceed in order to work the best for the community kids.
It was a great presentation from every students, because through the presentations, i can clearly see everyone is doing their very best, to think of the best idea, design and prepare for the community kids.
Week 5
On the fifth week, our progression are not really much because we are quite busy with our submission and on the same week we had a field trip to Cambodia with the coursemates.
I am not going to Cambodia with them, but most of my group mates were going. So i continue to contact as many friends of mine to ask if they have any unused book can donate for the community kids. Fortunately, one of my church friend have a few bags of unused books they she planning to throw it away, then i asked her to keep it and i will go and collect it from her as soon as possible.
However, i also asked one of my church mate, although she didn't have any unused book but she still helped me to ask around for the unused book in order to help the community kids.
Week 6
On the sixth week, we had a discussion meeting with the whole class of semester 6 students also Mr.Edwin. We told him about our progress and everything. On the other hand, we also know the progress of our course mates.
On the same same during tutorial meeting, our group(Books and magazines) need to design a poster to stick on the wall in campus so that people can know that there is such thing happening now.
Designing a poster is not easy, we changed and changed multiple times to design the best for people and it also represent the school. So we all need to do our very best.
Mr.Edwin also by our side guide and lead us throughout the whole designing process and finally we made it.
This is the progress that we design our poster and we really thank you Mr.Edwin for guiding us patiently along the way
After done with the poster, we went to Taylor's office to ask for the permission letter so that we can paste our poster in the campus.
(We actually did a brochure design also for putting it into people's mailbox) But unfortunately, out design has been rejected by Mr.Edwin because of the design is not alike with the poster.
Week 7
We started to separate all the books into different categories, like storybooks, academy books, different ages of books etc. After discussion, we decided to use color sticker to stick at the side of the book so that they can differentiate which books belongs to which book shelf.
We also started to go and apply permission for putting box in SLC and the event management people are always away from the office so we need to keep texting her and emailing her until we got her reply. Fortunately, the next days we've got the reply and finally they will help us to stick the poster on the wall and the ox are also allowed to put in SLC for people to put their book anytime.
On the same week , we had a short and quick presentation with Mr.Edwin to update our progress and know everyone's progression. So far, we also received a few stacks of books from bryan's church and we started to filter it every day a little by little. Still, we are keep receiving books from people everyday. Although we only receive a little from other people, but the more we ask, the more we can collect from others and it will slowly achieve our 1000 books goal.
Week 8
On the eighth week, i receive a small bag of books from my church friend, although there's only 20 books in it but i really thankful for everyone who is willing to help and i will keep myself motivated to ask as many people as i can.
We also started to print all the brochure out and start distributing it to the peoples in the campus. We went to cafeteria, office, and walk way to tell people about the donation and distribute the brochure.
We still keep ourselves updated with Mr.Edwin, so every week we will have meeting and update our progress with Mr.Edwin to make sure everyone is progressing and everyone is doing something.
Week 9
After we had a meeting with Mr.Edwin and the team mates of books and magazine, we decided to ask for our junior's help. We printed the the poster and start to do our task which is to get permission and approval by the lecturers then only enter into junior's class to tell them about the donation purpose and event itself.
We inform them to bring at least one book per person. Some of them are not originally from Malaysia so they either bought a new book and some of them give us the money as donation. We give them a week to prepare the book, which means we will receive their books after Hari Raya holidays. But after a few days which is before the holidays, we do receive a few books from the juniors, not everyone of them but we still thank them for their effort to help us.
Week 10
Although its one week raya off, we still keep them reminded. We remind them a few days before the school reopens, to make sure they all remember and prepare their books. Fortunately, some of them really prepare the books and pass it to me after the holiday.
During the raya holidays, we went back to campus to do some book filter and discussion with the group member. We realized we only have around 700 books after counting all the books, so we start doing some planning, like each of us have to at least find another 100 books before the pre-launching date so we will achieve 1200 books. We all write down the friends that are possible to donate the books and start contacting them.
We received a big bag of books from Ms Sharmila after posting the donation on social media (instagram).
Week 11
During the first day of school reopens after raya holidays, we receive a bunch of books from the auntie who is selling wafer at block C. That day when we pass her the brochure and tell her about the donation, she did say she has a lot of unused but still in a good conditions books. So here are all the books she brought for us.
I also receive a few books from a lecturer, but is approached by a semester 1 interior architecture student. She told her lecturer about the book donation, so the lecturer also helped us. Although there are not much books that he gave us, but mostly in good condition and very good quality books. Mostly importantly is the heart to help others and share the happiness of knowledge.
This is is a very important week as it is pre-launching week, and some of us have to go and prepare for the day of launching - 22nd June 2019. We had a small, simple and a quick meeting and discussion with Mr.Edwin about our progress and the planning on the launching day itself.
Week 12
This week is supposed to wrap up all the collections, due to insufficient amount of books, we don't give up every opportunity to collect as many books as we can. We all go to the neighbors around us and try to see if there is any book. At first, i thought i will not receive any, surprisingly they are very kind-hearted to donate their books! Some of them donate their books on the spot, and some of the neighbors ask us to collect the day after.
LAUNCHING DAY (23 JUNE 2019)
Our launching day was held on the 23 June 2019 at Kampung Orang Asli Serendah to hand over the mini library to the people there. On the day itself, we all semester 6 students reach at the site at 10am sharp to do all the decoration and some of the event set up procedure. There are altogether 2 teams of volunteers which is to arrange the tables, cups, utensils. drink dispenser and the food that Ms.Norji had catered for 100pax. Another team would be to prepare the decorations on site - ribbons, balloons. We all help one another to so that the work can done on time and the event can start on time as well.
Before the event starts, we get ready to welcome all the guest, invite them to their seat and support the event. Fortunately, the event goes smoothly. Mr.Edwin, Ms.Norji, Darren and the head of Kampung gave a very good speech.
We all help to control the volume of the kids during the event and they all are very simple and naive which they will listen to us and try to lower down their voice.
Before the refreshment session starts, we had an open ceremony with a total of 9 peoples.
We also learn to help to serve as some of the kids are still very young, so we help them to take the foods they want into the plate so that they wont drop the foods or mess up the table whereas the queue will also go faster if there's someone to serve.
We really give thanks to Ms.Norji who prepared all the food catering for the event so that everyone can have enough delicious food to enjoy!

The NEW mini library
Conclusion
In a nutshell, we was really a great opportunity to have this chance to help the people who needs help also to do all these things throughout the whole module. Planning, ask for donation, sponsorship, collect books, brainstorming, etc. All these were not easy but we really learnt a lot.
Overall we have collected more or less 1200 books according to semester 4 how in charge of the books and magazines. Although looking for unused book is not that easy, but i really enjoy the process. The team work together to do our part, separate task to each and everyone of us, we ask all of our friends and family for all the unused books.
At first each member of 5 are supposed to collect 300 books, but if one of the member collected lesser, then the other member will try to collect more in order to help each other as a team. Besides, we also help each other to carry books from the car, then to the studio. As all of us girls in the team, sometimes we also ask help from the guys in our class. Fortunately, they all are willingly to show their hand. Our classmates, lecturers, juniors, and seniors all are very helpful and kind to help us to collect books and ask around.
We tried out best to collect all the books no matter how far the place is. We will always drive to the location to collect all the knowledge from the people who are willing to help.
It is really happy that i can give a hand to people who need the knowledge while i still able to help. The happiest moment while i am spreading the news of donation to other is that their expression are special. Most of them really show their desparate-ness to donate their unused, no matter they have only one book they are still willing to donate and to share the knowledge. Which is a really touching and one of my biggest motivation to work harder, ask more people. Sharing is caring, happiness is helping people. Hopefully all the the knowledge can be share widely and help the children in Orang Asli Kampung Serendah to gain the interest of reading, studying, have a better future.
In a nutshell, huge thanks to Mr.Edwin and Ms.Norji who help us a lot throughout the whole process, helps us to think of the brochure idea, the solutions, brainstorm with us, spend time to meeting with us, always ask us for process, etc. Not to forget, all the semester 6 awesome peoples, diploma and semester 4 students to work together so that we can successfully done the mini library. Team work makes the dream works.
